Ruth Bader Ginsburg tealight holder.

Deets

Made to honor a legend and assure her discerning stare lives on. I snagged a 3D model of the bust from GrabCAD, added in a plynth and a holder for tealight candles.

Blender and Solidworks

The process of adding in mechanical geometry to an otherwise very organic model is very interesting to me. I have used a mix of Blender and Solidworks for most of these types of projects and often run into trouble with Solidworks choking on complex surface geometry. I’ve found that using the VRML (.wrl) format to move between the two programs gives the best chance at a smooth process. If the surface/.stl model is very large, I’ll start in Blender and decimate the model before bringing it into Solidworks. I sometimes bring the Solidworks geometry back into Blender and use union to add or subtract it from the .stl depending on what’s needed.

Printing and Finishing

I printed this with a .2mm layer height with gray ABS. I included some support material around the lace/necklace was ended up being quite difficult to remove - you can still see some of the remnants. I opted for an unfinished look for the final piece, I think it works reasonably well.
